Kid Favourite Healthy Chocolate Smoothie

My kids are chocoholics. Quite the confession, it feels pretty good to get that out. I’m pretty sure my older one hadn’t tried chocolate until his first birthday cake and then he never turned back. It really was love at first bite. The younger one, well I’m pretty sure she got a few chocolate treats slipped to her from her brother by the time she was eight months. So anytime I want him to eat something, make it chocolate! It’s also my preferred form of child bribery.

Now I wanted to get in the habit of having smoothies in the afternoon as their snack. It’s easy and portable if need be and a healthy way to get more fruit, veggies, and dairy in my kids. Now once every few days I made a banana and cocoa smoothie and is become the most requested smoothie in our place. I make it a bit thinner so it’s easy for little ones to slurp up, but if making for adults, feel free to add ice, or more yogurt and less milk to thicken. It will also work fantastic with frozen bananas for extra creaminess and thicker texture.

Now cocoa powder on its own is not bad for you. Cocoa powder is packed with flavonoids, which are antioxidants. It contains(depending on brand) magnesium and iron as well. This is such a guilt free way to indulge in chocolate!

Makes 2-3 servings

  • 1 banana
  • 3 tbs of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt (or vanilla)
  • 1 cup of milk

Easy to make! Pop everything in your blender and blend. Serve and enjoy immediately! If not sweet enough for your kids’ taste feel free to add a little maple syrup to sweeten. Mine like it as is, but they are chocoholics!
